Keeping Your Site Updated
Avoiding the embarrassment and expense of a “broken” web site typically requires some maintenance. Unlike WiX, Squarespace, and other drag and drop site builders, website frameworks such as Wordpress, Joomla and Drupal are constantly being updated. Out-of-date frameworks and plugins are the leading cause of security breaches on websites, so keeping pace with updates is critical.
When was you last update?
So, how long has it been since you’ve updated of your site's framework or plugins? If your answer is “never” or close to it, you’re certainly not alone. Time to do some spring cleaning. If it’s likely your site is out of date, there are a couple of things to do before updating.
Backing up your site
First, be sure to make a backup of the site and the database before attempting any update to the site framework or plugins. Should something go wrong with the update process, being able to revert back to a previous version of the site will be essential.
Secondly, verify that all plugins attached to the site are compatible with the newest version of the framework. If they are not, key functionality of your site may not work after the update, requiring you to find a replacement plugin that is up-to-date or risk leaving your site out-of-date and unsecure.
